Google AdWords Enhanced Campaigns – The Latest Update

On February 6th 2013 Google announced an AdWords update they call Enhanced Campaigns. In short Enhanced Campaigns are an updated version of AdWords campaigns that amalgamate search campaigns split by device into one campaign that is in theory easier to manage.

This update effectively shrinks your sometimes triplicate Mobile, Tablet & Computer search campaigns into one campaign with the goal of simplifying account management by reducing the number of identical campaigns.

Mobile definitely has a lucrative place in the present and future of marketing and this update is a push by Google to help Search Engine Marketers and business owners to target these users more effectively.

A lot of noise has already been made about Google’s latest update some of it positive, much of it negative, some neutral, and some cautiously optimistic.

We here at Bloom are trying to reserve judgement until we see the outcome in action. We were surprised by this setting update but thankfully we still see a way of creating mobile, tablet or computer only campaigns if we have a need for it.

Despite our apprehension of this release we do see a few changes we are optimistically looking forward to:

  1. Ad Group level sitelinks (previously campaign level)
  2. Free click to call ads on mobile (previously: $1 per call)
  3. Full release of Offers ad extensions (previously beta only)
  4. Ability to increase bids by proximity to stores on mobile
  5. Ability to change bids by device within one campaign (previously one bid for all devices)

Just for fun we decided to take a quick survey on Facebook to poll what others were thinking of the update and it seems most people polled have either a positive or impartial view.

We asked:

What do you think about Google’s announcement for Enhanced Campaigns?

We got these responses:

You can still cast your vote here.

So when should you start seeing this “upgrade” in your account? Google announced that by late February 2013 all advertisers will be able to choose to upgrade your account. You won’t be able to hold onto your current campaign setting for long though because come June 2013 (tentative) all campaigns will be auto-“upgraded” to Enhanced Campaigns by Google. Thanks Google!
